Epilepsy Drugs and Treatment
The most common way to treat epilepsy is to prescribe anti-epileptic drugs. The first antiepileptic drugs were bromides, bromides were introduced by Sir Charles Locock in 1857. He observed that bromides had a sedative effect and seemed to reduce seizures. More than 20 different antiepileptic drugs are currently available, all with different benefits and draw backs including side effects. The choice of which drug you take, and at what dosage, depends on a lot of factors, some factors are the type of seizures you have, your age, current health, and how often you have seizures. People with epilepsy should do what their doctor prescribes and ask any questions about their epilepsy drugs that they may have.
Doctors seeing a patient who was just diagnoised with epilepsy are often prescribed carbamazepine, valproate, lamotrigine, oxcarbazepine, or phenytoin first, unless the epilepsy is a type that requires different treatment. For absence seizures, ethosuximide is often the best treatment. Other commonly prescribed drugs include clonazepam, phenobarbital, and primidone. Some relatively new epilepsy drugs include tiagabine, gabapentin, topiramate, levetiracetam, and felbamate. Other drugs can be used in combination with one of the standard drugs or for intractable seizures that do not respond to other medications. A few drugs, like fosphenytoin, have been approved for use only in hospitals to treat specific problems such as epilepticus. For people who have frequent severe seizures that can be easily recognized by the person’s family, the drug diazepam is now available as a gel that can be administered rectally. This method of drug delivery may be able to prevent epilepticus.
For most people with epilepsy, seizures can be controlled with one drug. Combining medications usually amplifies negative side effects such as fatigue and decreases appetite, so doctors usually prescribe only one epilepsy drug, Combinations of drugs are sometimes prescribed if one drug fails to effectively control your seizures.
Red – Burning And Stinging Eyes? Could It Be Blepharitis?
Blepharitis is a common condition of the eyelids. It affects the eyelid margins in the vicinity of the lashes. The lid margin becomes red, a little irregular and lumpy looking and sometimes with flakey or crusty deposits on and amongst the lashes. Because this part of the eyelid is immediately adjacent to the eye itself blepharitis can also disturb the surface of the eye and cause burning and stinging discomfort, and in bad cases may even disturb vision.
The eyelid has an interesting and intricate structure. Packed close together near the eyelid margin are a variety of different components. The eyelashes are obvious. Less so are microscopic oil and sweat glands located next to each eyelash root. In a separate layer slightly nearer to the eye is a line of different oil producing glands. These are called “meibomian glands”. There are about 20 in each lid. They are tiny vertical streaks arranged side by side and perpendicular to the lid edge. If the lower lid is drawn down and off the eye they can sometimes be seen through the lid lining. Each one has a tiny opening on the lid margin, just on the eye side of the lashes. These can sometimes be observed as a line of dots. The oil they produce is a vital component of tears.
In blepharitis these eyelid structures are disturbed or “misbehave”. For example the oil produced by the meibomian glands may be too tenacious and clog and block the glands. This may cause an irritation and reaction within the neighbouring tissues. If this grumbles on for a long period the smooth contour of the lid edge becomes irregular. Accumulation of the oil may cause lashes to clumps together in tufts. The oil can also be chemically altered by the local bacteria into substances similar to soap. When this happens bubbling and foaming occurs along the lower lid margin; although this can only be seen using high magnification. These events cause the fine local blood vessels to become more engorged giving the lid a more reddened edge. The soap like chemicals may spill onto the eye and upset the tear film. If this is significant the usually smooth surface of the cornea becomes roughened causing blurring of vision and light sensitivity. The surface of the eye is exquisitely sensitive and eye discomfort is common in blepharitis; especially a burning sensation.
When blepharitis is mainly the result of alteration to the meibomian gland oils it is called “seborrhoeic blepharitis”. In some cases however there is a much increased presence of staphyloccal bacteria on the lid margin. The features then become more those of an infection. There is more crusting amongst the eyelashes and some fall out due to infection within the lash follicle. There may also be occasional minor bleeding and tiny beads of pus. This form is called “staphylococcal blepharitis”.
The condition can be tackled on several fronts. Warm compresses over the lids can soften and help unclog the meibomian glands. The lid margins and lashes should be regularly bathed and wiped to remove accumulation of crusts, debris and bacteria. This can be followed by applying an antibiotic gel to the cleaned zone. This is particularly necessary in staphylococcal blepharitis where a preparation containing the anti-staphyloccocal agent Fusidic Acid is often used. Sometimes a topical steroid preparation is also applied to the lid margin and eye. Lubricant eye drops can help improve tear film quality and help flush irritant substances from the eye. Lubricant gels may help smooth the corneal surface. If eye drops are used, where ever possible, these should be of the preservative free form as the preservative in such medications can further irritate the ocular surface. Occasionally a tetracycline antibiotic take by mouth for several weeks or months is needed. As well as their antibiotic action these drugs work in other less well understood ways to “quieten” the meibomian glands. Despite these treatment options it can sometimes be difficult to cure blepharitis. For some people it is part of their constitution and will tend to wax and wane over time.
Laser refractive surgery (e.g. LASIK, LASEK, Epi-LASIK and PRK) or intraocular surgery is unwise in the presence of active blepharitis.
HIV – An Overview
HIV or human immunodeficiency virus belongs to a group of virus referred to as retroviruses. This virus damages and kills the cells of the immune system once it gets into the body. Although the body will keep up by attempting to contain the virus or by creating new cells, the virus will eventually win out and proceed into destroying the bodies capabilities to fight off infections and certain type of cancers. An untreated condition of HIV will lead to AIDS.
Among the important HIV AIDS facts that one must be aware of is that such infection has been spreading like wild-fire in every country around the world. An estimated 40 million individuals are now being infected with HIV, while around 25 million have already died from the condition. The infection has been very devastating in the sub-Saharan Africa, however the rates of infection in other parts of the world are also high. In the United States alone, 1 million individuals are estimated to be infected.
85% of the HIV transmissions worldwide are through heterosexual sex. Heterosexual transmission in the United States accounts for about one-third of the new diagnoses in the United States, while around half of them came from male homosexual transmissions. It is believed that the higher percentage of current infections came from heterosexual transmission due to the fact that the diagnosis of the condition usually happen a couple of years after being infected.
Female HIV infections are increasing as well. In fact, 42% of HIV-infected people worldwide are women. Approximately 25% of new recent cases in the United States are among women. On the bright side, infection among children in the United States has dramatically decreased, recording only 38 cases in 2006. This is primarily because of the tests and treatments done on infected mothers and due to the established uniform testing procedures on blood products.
A lot of people are not aware that they are infected because they do not usually observe any symptoms after being infected. Common HIV symptoms encountered are flu-like conditions, headache, enlargement of the lymph nodes within the neck, fever, and tiredness. Such symptoms normally disappear on their own after a few weeks. The person will then experience no symptoms and feel normally healthy. This sort of asymptomatic phase usually lasts for several years.
The development of the condition differs from person to person. It could last for a few months up to more than a decade. In this phase, the HIV virus continues to infect and kill cells of the immune system and multiply actively. The virus attacks and destroys the CD4 white blood cells which are the primary fighters of infections in the body. The infected person remains to be highly infectious despite not having any symptoms.
The HIV virus can be transmitted through sharing of needles with an infected person, usually when injecting steroids or drugs, or in tattooing or body piercing. HIV can also be transmitted by taking part in unprotected sex, regardless if it’s vaginal, anal or oral sex. There are also instances of newly born babies acquiring the condition of their HIV-positive mother upon birth or through breastfeeding.
The most important thing to do once observing some HIV-like symptoms is to visit your nearest HIV testing centers and get tested. It’s not the end of the world for you if tested positive, for there are a lot of life-sustaining HIV treatments readily available to make your life normal as much as possible. There are also various ways to modify your sexual behavior to prevent transmissions to your sexual partners. It really helps a lot if the condition is earlier detected, so have yourself tested as soon as possible to get appropriate treatment to your condition.

Breast Cancer Cure – How to Achieve it by Making Lifestyle Changes
Treating the root cause or causes of breast cancer is far more important than treating the obvious immediate symptoms. Treating only symptoms, which is the cancer growth will simply cover up the real underlying problem and will cause the problem to return or to spread to another area. A genuine cure will look for the reasons why the cancer first appeared and address those reasons and that will allow the body to permanently heal.
The words breast cancer scares people and someone newly diagnosed with the disease will blindly follow authority without stopping and applying a bit of common sense. What they need is information on the subject so they can make informed decisions on their best treatment options based on knowledge. There are many facts that are known about breast cancer but you are seldom told.
Breast cancer doesn’t just happen; it is the result of something you did, so it makes sense that it can be corrected also. To successfully overcome a diagnosis of breast cancer it is much more important to look for the reasons why it occurred in the first place and address those reasons. When you remove the factors that caused the problem the body through the immune system has a natural tendency to heal itself and will remove the cancer without it spreading or returning.
Our bodies are continuing trying to heal themselves and that is with the aid of our built in repair system which is the immune system. Right through life our immune system keeps us healthy as it repairs cuts and bruises, broken bones, infections, diseases and also cancer. But it needs a little help and only you can do that and that is by eating the food that’s been designed for human consumption and removing the everyday food items that have contributed to the problem.
Breast cancer is simply a disease of a weak immune system, that’s been weakened by the way we now live, especially with our wrong food choices. These are foods that use refined flour and sugar, also the consumption of too much animal fat, salt, caffeine, and alcohol. Lifestyle factors may include constant worry, anger, fear, frustration. Also the chemicals that affect us and they are chlorine, fluoride, pesticides, smoking, and all drugs. All these factors contribute to breast cancer.
There are only natural ways to strengthen the immune system and that is to eat freshly grown fruit and vegetables everyday, most of which have cancer fighting properties, make sure you get adequate rest and sleep, fresh air, sunshine, exercise and lastly a positive attitude towards life which is very important.
Breast cancer is an entirely curable disease but a person must take central responsibility for his or her own health and have an active involvement in the healing process. A change in the way you live is essential, especially with the food you eat because all those factors are the causes of breast cancer today.
